Outdoor safety starts well before an emergency call. The information available during routine activity can shape the choices made when contact is lost, terrain becomes difficult and rescue teams need to organize a response.
That connection between routine awareness and emergency action is at the centre of WildGuard—Intelligent Emergency Rescue for Complex Outdoor Environments. The project is being advanced by a research team from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Xi'an Technological University.
The team began with a survey of existing rescue technologies and the needs of outdoor rescue operations. Its approach is application-led: LoRa is used as an established communications technology within an integrated concept that brings together user-side terminals, ground rescue nodes, UAV-enabled mobile nodes and a command interface.

Research exchange, prototype work and test planning are helping the team consider how these components can fit real rescue tasks. The emphasis is on making information more usable for professional assessment, not on presenting LoRa itself as a new invention or replacing rescue judgment with a single technical output.
Further work will examine how the WildGuard application can be adapted for mountain emergency response, visitor-area safety and outdoor-activity risk management.
